Do Catholics really pray to a Saint to get pregnant?

The answer is yes, but it should be made clear up front that Catholics do not worship Saints.  Catholics, like other Christians believe in One God in three persons– The Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Catholics do pray to Saints to guide them through various trials in their lives and there is pretty much a Saint dedicated to any trial you might be facing.  Catholics simply ask the Saint of their choosing to pray for them for whatever trial they are facing.  In this case, trying to get pregnant, the Saints Catholics rely on is none other than St. Gerard.

First a little bit about this very special Saint.  Saint Gerard Majella, the "Patron Saint of Motherhood," was born in 1726 in a small town in the south of Italy called Muro. Gerard was devoted to his widowed mother and he also devoted his life to God and helping others. He became a lay brother in 1749. He was a man known for his extraordinary wisdom. He spent his life dedicated to helping the needy and the poor.  He too led a life of poverty and was a very simple man. He often gave away his earnings and his own food to the poor and those that came to him never left empty-handed.   St. Gerard was also known to have mystical abilities such as powers of prophecy, healing, bilocations, the reading of consciences, and so forth.   He even predicted the day and hour of his own death. During his short life he helped many and performed many miracles. It seems that God had given him, in particular, the special power to help mothers in need.   In life and since his death, he has helped so many women who have prayed to him during labor that he earned the nickname the "Saint of Happy Deliveries." Many mothers from all over the world have even named their child Gerard after him in gratitude, and have adopted him as their patron in the joys and fears of childbirth.  St. Gerard lived a very short life dying at twenty-nine from tuberculosis be his legacy has lived on due to the many life’s he’s touched.

St. Gerard is credited for helping thousands of families conceive that faced a variety of challenges.  It’s been reported that mother’s who were told they could not conceive by their doctor turned to St. Gerard and had a devotion to him that led to their eventual pregnancy.  St. Gerard is also credited for the healing of many sick children.

Prayers for Motherhood

O good Saint Gerard, powerful intercessor before God and Wonderworker of our day, I call upon thee and seek thy aid. Thou who on earth didst always fulfill God’s designs, help me to do the holy Will of God. Beseech the Master of Life, from whom all paternity proceedeth, to render me fruitful in offspring that I may raise up children to God in this life and heirs to the Kingdom of His Glory in the world to come. Amen.
